Prior to development, it was owned privately and used primarily for hunting, ranching, and farming by the Guggenheim family. Development of Daniel Island did not begin until after 1996. Open green areas reign supreme on Daniel Island. There are over 20 parks with several main parks providing a central focal point for the different neighborhoods that surround them. Homeowners have access to almost 20 miles of biking and hiking paths.
