Beech Hill Elementary School9

Summerville, SC | Dorchester County

If you value your involvement in your children's education, consider all your school placement options before enrolling your children at Beech Hill Elementary School. Our first year was decent because the teacher was superb, this year has been a train wreck of finger pointing, lack of communication, disastorus meeting after meeting to attempt to find common ground, blatant dishonesty from the staff and lack of skills from the staff to coordinate any semblance of control in their environment. That school may have top ratings, but something very important is missing there and if more parents were truly more involved in their children's education, the ratings would plummet. I'm an involved parent and my goal has always been to give my children the education they deserve. Each family is different, and each encounter is different, but I know that I would not recommend Beech Hill Elementary School to any family that is searching for a public school to place their children in.

I have to disagree with the last review. The teachers send notes home on a calendar informing you of your child's behavior. Teacher always responds to emails and I can set up a parent teacher conference when ever we have any questions. This is our first year at the school and are very happy with how much our child is learning. I give Beech Hill two thumbs up.

We were very excited when our daughter started at Beech Hill, as the previous reviews states, its beautiful, the principle is charming, it receives accolades, blah, blah, blah. Then we got six months into the school year and boy did my opinion change. There is a severe issue with Bullying at this school, and it is the administrations opinion to handle it "in house" instead of informing parents and holding consequences for the children. We have had so many issues, and when I speak to the faculty and admin. all I get are smoke screens and mirrors. I don't understand how children getting A's and B's in a subject get extra help to maintain their grades but the kids that struggle don't qualify for help, really? Think long and hard before going to this school. Beach chairs and surf boards in the halls, do not a great school make. The PTA is a clique ran by Administration, their is no communication, and the entire school hides behind a policy book filled with "grey area" policy. Looking forward to moving in two months, it's been real, but not real nice.

This is an excellent school with an excellent principal, Ms. Harris. Ms. Harris has a passion for children and it shows. The one single problem this school has is overcrowding. Hopefully when the new schools are built in the district they can re-draw the lines and alleviate the really large class sizes. The technology at this school seems competitive and my sister who is an out of state teacher reviewed the methods this school uses as posted on the DD2 website and says they are right on track with national teaching methods and trends. The teachers are dedicated, there is good parental involvement and the facilities are well maintained. If it weren't for the really full class sizes, it'd be just about perfect. So if you have a child that needs a LOT of extra attention from the teacher, you might think twice about this school due to class size issues but otherwise, I highly recommend it!

My Children and now my grandchildren go to this school, and I must say it is a honor to be able to say that they attend there! The leadership has always been top notch, and Mrs. Harris is the most amazing woman! She leads her staff and Children to not only achieve but to "Shine" = Safe, Honest, Intelligent, Nurturing and Empowering... any open school function has standing room only, parents are very involved... And we were awarded with the prestigious Palmetto's finest award! I just cannot say enough good things :)

All three of my children attended Beech Hill Elementary School while we lived in Summerville from 2002-2008. We did our homework and researched schools before buying a house across the street in Legend Oaks. I cannot say enough good things about this school and its staff. My children had an amazing experience here. Not only did they receive great educational instruction, they also learned values that will serve them well in life. My son had the privilege of being in an all-boy classroom in 2nd grade and it was a fantastic year for him. Beech Hill has been recognized nationwide as a model for the option of same-sex education. The principals during our time there were great leaders. The current principal is an amazing woman - compassionate, smart, and classy through and through. I have never seen so much parental involvement in a school. I loved having the opportunity to help in the classroom and at school events. The teachers are top-notch. Our time at Beech Hill was wonderful and not having all three kids complete 5th grade there was one of the hardest things about moving away. I would not hesitate to recommend Beech Hill.

Having transferred from out of state I must say that my wife and I are relatively impressed with everything so far, especially the safety factor. Currently we have one major concern, coming from a northern state with a clear academic objective I know for a fact that not just Beach Hill but all South Carolina schools are light years behind. My sons response to reviewing phonics was 'um are you kidding me' and my other child in a different grade is reviewing addition when the multiplication table has already been drilled home. I will reserve judgment for now but definitely fear the future as a another relocation for me and my family is only a year away. Sleepless in Summerville.........

I had three kids in Beech Hill last year, two will be attending this year. I am so impressed with this school - the teachers are awesome - all of the teachers I've encountered have been filled with enthusiam and seem to genuinely care for all the kids. My kids have excelled at this school. The principal is amazing - she is constantly searching for new and innovative programs for the school - has an energy level that few can surpass, and the kids adore her. My daughter, after completing kindergarten, reads at a second grade level. My oldest daughter, now entering middle school, is in the GATE program, and my son has been on the A/B honor roll throughout - they have abilities that Beech Hill has skillfully fostered. I can't say enough positive things about this school.

My daughter absolutely love BHES! We came from Florida and BHES blows them away hands down! The teachers are involved, the principal and assist principals are dedicated to the students. Unfortunately, this school is busting at the seams with all the new development in this area, but they are trying to accommodate everyone. I like that we get a newsletter every week with all the new updates and upcoming events. I love that they have puzzle team, they encourage art, and even juggling! I just love that.

There are many things that we love Beech Hill Elementary School. It is a clean, safe, warm environment with clear educational goals. My son is thriving there academically. I do feel that they have lost their way recently. The growth of the school has forced some bad decisions with regard to lunch hour times and parent involvement. I'd like to see a return to the way beech hill used to be. It's lost some of its warmth lately.

We recently moved from an 'A' school in Ohio to Beech Hill Elementary. Beech Hill blows the Ohio school away. My son's teacher is involved. I know what my child is learning every day in school. The school is great with security. At no time can an adult enter the school. I feel secure when my son is there and also know he is learning a lot. This is an excellent academic and secure school. When we moved here, finding a great school was the number one priority. The principal holds monthly meetings with parents to hear concerns, we get monthly newsletters, and daily reports from the teacher! I am so happy we chose Beech Hill Elementary!

Beech Hill is a solid school in all areas. The children are definitely a top priority for the administrators, teachers, even cafeteria and maintenance personel. There are numerous opportunities for parent involvement and it is encouraged at every turn by the strong PTA and the caring teachers and administration. As an involved parent, I have gone to teachers and administrators with various concerns and have been pleased with the sincere response and the resolutions. BHES is a rather large elementary school, but makes every attempt to involve parents, and be available to those who have ideas or concerns. Yes, the school is attractive and volunteers spend many hours keeping it that way! Yes, the PTA has fundraisers. The money is spent according to need and priorities selected by surveying the membership at large. Immense improvements in safety, technology, curriculum, and materials have been made possible as a result!

I want to take a minute to applaud Beech Hill on their safety and discipline. I am a Substitute Teacher for all DD2 elementary schools and let me tell you Beech Hill I have found to be the best by far. There is someone at every door and they follow every rule. My daughter attends school at Beech Hill and she loves it. Anyone who has anything negative to say about any school truly needs to volunteer for a whole day to truly appriciate any principal or teacher. The schools are always in need of help. We as parents some times forget that the school is there to educate our children, not raise them. We as parents must be actively involved for our children to truly be the best they can be. The principals are always involved in everything that the students participate in. Thanks Beech Hill for all your efforts!
